The only answer I can think of is that it hurts. You know it will hurt or make chaos in your life or get you in trouble - to make a mistake. We want to avoid it, yet we tend to step in to it anyway.
Learning is always hard. Especially if the test comes before the lesson...

Huh. I don't feel like I have an answer to this question...
Perhaps we're all just terrified of letting go, of moving on? (Because that would mean moving toward our inevitable end?)
